DR. Vera Silva

Dr. Silva is the Chief Technology Officer for GE Renewable Energy’s Grid Solutions business, leading a team of 3,600 engineers in over 17 countries around the world.  Under her leadership, the engineering team is responsible for researching, designing and producing world-class products and solutions for Grid Solutions’ customers.

Prior to her current role, Dr. Silva worked at Electricité de France (EDF), the largest French Utility dealing in electricity generation, distribution and sales, where she spent 9 years working in Research & Development in several roles: as Program Director, Senior Engineer, Project Manager and Research Engineer.  Preceding EDF, she worked in research in Electrical and Electronic Engineering, first at the University of Manchester and subsequently at Imperial College London. She started her career as a lecturer and data scientist for the Polytechnic Institute of Porto, Portugal. 

With over twenty years of experience, Dr. Silva is a respected industry leader with four books and over 40 scientific papers published, as well as contributions to several important industry works. In 2019, Vera was elevated to the grade of Senior Member of IEEE, reflecting her professional achievements.  In 2016, she was recognized as “Engineer of the Year” by the IEEE Power and Energy Society and received the ESIG annual achievement award for her contribution in the field of renewables integration to power systems.

In early 2019, Dr. Silva was chosen as one of the 26 “Everyday Superheroes: Women in STEM Careers”, an educational resource published for NEED's (National Energy Education Development, U.S.) unit's and Energy Lab for Kids, as it features real women doing energy work to encourage the pursuit of STEM careers. 

Dr. Silva holds a Ph.D. in Electrical and Electronic Engineering, from Imperial College London and a master’s and a BSc in Electrical Engineering & Computer Science from the University of Porto, Portugal.  Originally from Portugal, today she’s is based in Paris and has been living in England and France for the best part of 15 years. Dr. Silva is fluent in Portuguese, English, French and Spanish.
